PROJECT «SOUTH OSSETIA EVENTS APPRAISAL, AUGUST 2008»
In August 14-18, 2008, newspaper «Segodnya» together with Research & Branding Group held the sociological research in order to reveal the attitude of Ukrainians towards South Ossetia events.
Data collection was executed with the help of face to face interview in 24 regions of Ukraine and the Crimea. Respondents were selected with the help of quote selection, representing adult population 18+ according to habitation (region), gender and age. Sum total of the selection is 2000 people. Expected mistake of the selection is +-2,2%.
- Majority of the population of Ukraine is well informed and are interested in the South Ossetia events.
- Meanwhile, opinions of ordinary Ukrainians concerning the objectiveness of information delivery by Ukrainian mass-media have divided – part of citizens believe that Ukrainian mass-media isn’t objective enough (44%), while part of citizens consider Ukrainian mass-media quite qualified and objective (39%).
- More than a half of all respondents noted that Ukrainian mass-media take the Georgian side of the South Ossetia conflict.
- Ukrainians tend to believe that the aggressor in the South Ossetia conflict is Georgia (37%), or Russia (30%). These very countries were called the main aggressors in Caucasus in general.
- Opinions of different regions’ inhabitants vary: from the West to the South-East number of people who find Georgia the aggressor in this very situation is increasing, and on the contrary - from the South-East to the West number of Russia “haters” growth dramatically.
- Almost every third citizen of Ukraine (38%) tends to take Russian and South Ossetia’s side, or prefers to remain neutral– staying away from anybody’s side (34%). Almost every fifth Ukrainian supports Georgia (22%).
- Practically every third Ukrainian (34%) considers finding South Ossetia an independent state the only solution of conflict’s resolving (48% would approve this option), every fifth – return to the pre-conflict situation in region.
- Most of Ukrainians believe that Ukraine should stay neutral in the South Ossetia conflict.
- Though, more than a half of Ukrainians disagree, that Ukraine should hurry up with entering NATO, influenced by the South Ossetia conflict, they believe it is more important to strengthen personal neutrality (refuse to enter any political and war units); and about ½ of Ukrainians are liable to become closer with Russia.
